Blog

When you serve in the military, one of the benefits is that you and your family are able to get assistance with obtaining a higher education. When it comes to getting financial help, there are lots of different resources that you can use.

G.I. Bill

The GI Bill is still being used today to help military personnel pay for further education. This is one of the strongest programs which provides educational funds for military members.

The GI Bill has been modified over time, and the benefits of the GI Bill can actually be passed onto an immediate family member. One can pass on a few months, or the entire benefit package to a family member. However, one can only pass on the benefits if they have so many years of service under their belt, and they have to serve an additional number of years if they transfer the benefits to a relative.

This is a good option if one knows that they want to continue serving in the military and also knows that they don't want to use the benefits themselves.

Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts

The military recognizes the importance of not only educating members of the military, but the military member's spouses education as well. The Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts is a great program that gives a small amount of money to a military spouse who is pursuing a degree or another type of license or certification that will allow them to obtain a job.

Like the GI Bill, there are specific requirements attached to this financial assistance. One has to use the award within a set period of time, and the member serving in the military one has to reach a certain rank before their spouse can receive this assistance.

Private Scholarships & Grants

There are a wide variety of private organizations that sponsor both grants and scholarships that are aimed to benefit members of the military and their families. One has to do a little searching to find these grants and scholarships opportunities, but there are numerous scholarship programs aimed at helping military families in the private sector. You just need to apply in order to qualify.

If you are serving or have served in the military, and you or your family want to advance your education, there are numerous opportunities available both through the military and through private organizations to finance your educational aspirations. You don't have to pay for your education out of pocket; there are lots of organizations and programs that can help with the costs of furthering your education.
